Alia Hartman is Root & Rebound’s Senior Development Manager. She has eight years of experience working in the development field, supporting nonprofit organizations that fight for the rights and dignity of currently and formerly incarcerated people and their families.

Her first foray into development work was at Prison Radio. This San Francisco-based organization records incarcerated people reading personal essays and works to distribute the recordings to media outlets and the general public. At Prison Radio, she worked directly with grassroots donors, helping them understand the importance of their impact, and garnered large and small contributions.

From there, she went to UnCommon Law, an organization focused on supporting people through the parole process, where she honed her skills in fundraising and donor relations, successfully securing substantial grants and working hard to change the narrative. She orchestrated impactful events inside and outside prison settings, fostering community engagement and support for the organization’s mission to realize a world where no human being is judged solely on their worst moment.

Alia’s journey in development has been deeply personal – she knows what it’s like to be separated by incarceration. Her father, Ken, served 38 years of an LWOP sentence that Gov. Jerry Brown later commuted. He was released from prison in 2017, just six days shy of Alia’s 22nd birthday. Seven years later, she still smiles at the novelty of being able to call him.

At Root & Rebound, as Senior Development Manager, Alia leverages her extensive personal and professional expertise to secure vital support for the organization’s initiatives in criminal justice reform. She holds a deep belief in the wisdom of currently and formerly incarcerated people and is proud to advocate for a world where individuals reentering society have the right to receive the support they need to lead stable, fulfilling lives.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Alia finds joy in a variety of hobbies. She enjoys writing fiction and poetry, practicing meditation and yoga, knitting, cooking, and spending time with her beloved Paws For Life graduate dog, Cowboy!

Why do you come to work at Root & Rebound every day?

As someone who experienced parental incarceration throughout my childhood, it’s an honor to give back to this community and to know that I am directly contributing to the reunification and uplifting of other families.
