Kiran Rao is a recent graduate of UC Berkeley, where she received a degree in Molecular Environmental Biology and a minor in Global Poverty & Practice. Her hope is to one day practice medicine on marginalized communities that have been harmed by environmental racism and climate change. Her work includes working with environmental justice non-profits in the East Bay as well as interning this past summer with the Pollitt Lab at the Yale School of Public Health. She has led numerous diversity initiatives within organizations and is a strong advocate for reducing health disparities, education equity & reform, and ecofeminism.
Parallelly, she has been a huge advocate of carceral state change since she was a high schooler, witnessing its effects on her community as well as nationwide movements to raise awareness about how unjust it was. Understanding and learning how the carceral system in America has been incredibly harmful to marginalized identities deepened her will to work to promote equity in a place where there is little. Coming to work at Root and Rebound was a great opportunity to support the work and impacted communities, and she is excited to be here to help.

Why do you come to work at Root & Rebound every day?
Navigating life and resources post-incarceration is a complex issue that continuously creates more disenfranchised and underprivileged communities. I am in great support of the work that R&R does to fight against this disparity, and allow them to lead healthy, well-supported lives, while advocating and raising the voices of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated folks. Being able to work with this organization to ultimately support grants, promote our work, and conceptualize how we are preforming allows more people to find and use our work. This is truly an incredible organization I am more than happy to be a part of!
