Rona Navales is a Development & Communications Assistant at Root & Rebound. She is a Bay Area based social justice advocate and liberatory creative working toward collective liberation with an intersectional feminist lens rooted in her decolonization journey.
She received a Bachelor of Journalism in Strategic Communication and a Minor in English from University of Missouri – Columbia in 2016. Prior to completing her undergraduate degree, Rona earned an Associate of Arts in Social and Behavioral Sciences from Santa Monica College.
During those collegiate years, she wrote for the campus newspaper and covered local human-interest stories as a television reporter for NBC affiliate, KOMU-TV. She interned with Los Angeles NPR station, KCRW, where she had the opportunity to gain a closer look at politics and culture.
To channel her creative juices, she has collaborated with artists and musicians as a stylist in creating fashion productions with an ethical and sustainable approach while aiming to dismantle beauty standards to empower all our uniqueness.
She loves to refuel her soul with beach days, travel, live music, a good book and quality time with loved ones.

Why do you come to work at Root & Rebound every day?
Simple, I work and live to cultivate inclusive spaces from a place of love. I wholeheartedly believe in collective liberation through healing and leveraging our privileges by wealth redistribution to reduce inequality. Wealth not only in the form of monetary contribution but the wealth distribution of knowledge, power and deep community care. With that being said, I believe in Root & Rebound’s mission toward justice, liberation and healing which continues to bring substantial change to a system that largely impacts BIPOC communities with tangible support that transforms the coming home process for clients and their loved ones. Furthermore, I am inspired to do this work as a way to pay homage to social justice leaders and human rights activists who fought tirelessly and laid the foundation through movements that have shown us what true equity can look like when we come together lovingly.
